Group Scholarships is an innovative SAF
programme, in which groups of 16 scholarships are given annually
to a young woman and a man selected from each of the eight South
Asian countries to study jointly in a number of institutions in
South Asia. SAF proceeds from the understanding that there is a
growing but unmet need for providing world-class education and training,
with a professional or vocational focus, to young women and men
in the countries of the South Asian region - Afghanistan, Bangladesh,
Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. This
need is acutely felt among young people from non-privileged and
socially disadvantaged backgrounds.
The SAF, through its eight country chapters, seeks pro-actively
to identify a bright young woman and a man each from the vast, untapped
talent pool of the region and help them develop their capabilities
through making provision for their education and training. The SAF
is committed to fair equality of opportunity and purposive affirmative
action.
By offering Group Scholarships in the field of journalism (India),
health education (Nepal), water management (Sri Lanka), arts (Pakistan),
preservation of cultural heritage (India) and South Asian studies
(Bangladesh), the Foundation simultaneously seeks to promote regional
amity and the formation of networks that can do a world of good
over the long term.
