Consultations between the two Organisations
were initiated in New York in 1997 and have taken place in 1998 and
2001. Modalities for future cooperation being discussed include:
- Regular consultations on UN and multilateral issues including on elective
posts;
- Sharing of expertise and experience including on poverty alleviation
programmes;
- Common approaches against terrorism;
- Academic exchanges;
- Programmes to combat HIV/AIDS;
- Encouraging cooperation between ASEAN and SAARC Chambers of Commerce;
- Encouraging people-to-people contact; and
- Closer Secretariat-to-Secretariat consultations.
The two Associations have agreed on the need to identify tangible cooperation
proposals and advised the Secretaries-General of the two Organisations
to consult with each other in this regard.
