Nepal, a sovereign, independent, landlocked, democratic, constitutional monarchy, non-aligned, Hindu Kingdom, lies on the lap of the highest mountain of the Himalayas, the highest peak of which is known throughout the world as "Mount Everest" (Sagarmatha).

It is a landlocked country; the nearest seaport is Calcutta in India, which is 1,120 kms away from Kathmandu, the capital of the country.

Climate

There are marked variations in the climate due to differences in altitude and in the topography of the country. Climatically, Nepal may be divided into three types:

  • Subtropical: The temperature ranges from 5ºc to 47ºc.
  • Temperate: The temperature ranges from -4ºc to 30ºc.
  • Alpine: The temperature ranges from several degrees below zero during winter to 16ºc during summer.
